I am a Kansas City, African-American, millennial blogger. A few years ago I created the money saving blog Ericka Saves. It was successful but as I grew and transitioned in life, the title no longer fit me. So I started fresh with Life of Random.
Before I created Ericka Saves I had lost everything and during the process of rebuilding and getting my life together I discovered that you don’t need a lot of money to have a wonderful life. During that time, I learned how to coupon, how to create a budget, how to save on groceries, and how to find and enjoy free events.
But now that I’m no longer in that desperate, hanging on to make it, I’m broke, situation, I started to sit back and think about what I really want for my life. I spent the majority of my life chasing a dream someone else planned for me. Not anymore. I want to live my life according to how I want to live it.
I realize that happiness is random. It’s not something that you just have. You have moments of it, and I’m fine with that. You learn to experience happiness in the midst of pain. I just want to live my life and help someone else along the way.
Some of the things you’ll find on Life of Random are Tips (all kinds including money saving), travel reviews (traveling is my passion), beauty tips, DIY projects, and randomness. I’m constantly growing, maturing and finding new interests as I’m sure you do too.
I’m quirky and goofy (although some people think I’m very serious). I love to laugh, I love my family and friends, and I try to live my life to the fullest.
My favorite food is Tacos (with a capital T, lol). I LOVE the Big Bang Theory, A Different World, and my guilty pleasure Being Mary Jane. My favorite living singer is Mariah Carey (old Mariah, but I’d still rock to whatever she has out on the radio), and my favorite singer of all time is Whitney Houston (I mean her voice was sickening and I mean that in a great way). I’m a hopeless romantic (maybe), I rocks my Natural Hair, and like to have new experiences.
I’ve always had a huge passion for traveling. I believe it was fueled by reading National Geographic magazines, and watching those European tours on PBS as a child.
My goal is to visit all 50 states, travel to every continent, try new experiences, try new adventures, try new foods, see the things I learned about in school, learn to cook exquisite meals from world-renowned chefs, and explore.
One thing that surprises everyone when they meet me is, I’m a Veteran of the United States Army (yes, girly-girl, me), I served for 6 years and did one tour overseas.
Meet The Clan:
Although I don’t have children, I am a proud aunt. Any given weekend you’ll find the kids hanging out with “Ti-Ti.” I asked the kids to come up with nicknames for my blog so here it goes:
My oldest niece, “Michelle”, was born in 2004, she’s a lover of all things music related. She sings really well, likes all genres of music, loves fashion, and is shy. She’s a preteen now so texting and decorating photos on the app A Beautiful Mess is her favorite pastime.
My second niece, “Z.Z.”, was born in 2006 and is a character. She’s studious, very confident, loves ballet, loves all things in nature, follows all rules and loves animals. She’s in gymnastics now, she decided that she liked it more than ballet, but we’ll see what happens. She’s really good at both.
My nephew, “Dre”, was also born in the year 2006, he likes basketball, football, trying new things, and loves to dance hip-hop. He’s in that phase where girls are starting to notice him, so now he likes fashion. He recently declared that “Polo Ralph Lauren” is his favorite brand of clothing, and is starting to spray that AXE body spray on himself, lol.
I also have a younger niece, her name is “Liyah,” she was born in 2013. She’s in that phase of thinking she can do everything on her own, and saying “NO” to everything. She gets into everything (like my mascara), throws things down the toilet, fights her sleep, takes random selfies on my phone, uses the iPad herself and really knows what she’s doing. She’s adorable while doing it all, but I’m ready for her to turn 5 though, lol.
We’ve had our dog Tamone for two years now. He was found by a family (abandoned as a puppy). They weren’t able to keep him so I adopted him. He’s such a sweetheart. I swear, I’ve never seen anything (or anyone) as excited to see me when I get home. He’s a pretty simple dog. When I first got him he suffered from separation anxiety, but now he’s just a little pop-tart of joy. He likes everyone, so if he barks or growls at you…you must have a bad spirit, lol.
I like to try new things, and I’m open for review and sponsorship opportunities. If you have a product you’d like me, the kids, or the dog to try, or a place you’d like us to visit, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org (ericka at lifeofrandom dot com).
